Chapter 4

Abolition of employment tribunal fees

[ch 4: page 46]

The government introduced fees for taking cases to an employment tribunal at the end of July 2013, but in July 2017, a successful legal challenge by public services union UNISON forced it to abolish them. The Supreme Court ruled that the government was acting unlawfully and unconstitutionally when it introduced the fees. The government had to refund more than £27 million to those charged for taking claims to tribunals.
