Chapter 11

Recording and reporting accidents under the RIDDOR Regulations

[page 177]

Employers, the self-employed and anyone in control of work premises must report and record particular categories of work-related incidents and “near misses” under RIDDOR.

These incidents must be notified in writing to the relevant enforcing authority, either the HSE or the local authority (see Chapter 2 on how to identify the correct enforcing authority for each sector).

Telephone reporting is only possible for accidents involving death and specified or major injury (tel: 0345 300 9923). All other reporting must be done online (not by fax or email). There are several different online reporting forms for reporting the different kinds of incident under RIDDOR. Injuries must be reported within 15 days.

Information on how to report can be found on the How to make a RIDDOR report page of the HSE website.
