Unions have won a series of legal victories ensuring as many workers as possible qualify for paid holiday. All workers are entitled to paid holiday from the first day of their job. This includes workers who are falsely classified by their employer as “self-employed” (King v The Sash Window Workshop [2017] C-214/16). Holiday pay rights have been a key battle ground for unions fighting for the rights of gig economy workers and against bogus self-employment (see pages 172-173).
