Employer adaptations
[ch 1: page 6]Employers were also forced to adapt, some with temporary changes, some with permanent improvements. Examples included extra paid leave for workers with Covid-19 symptoms or a diagnosis of infection or sheltering or self-isolating — implemented through Covid-19 special leave; sanctioned, authorised or emergency absence; or extra dependants’ leave.
Some employers improved occupational sick pay (OSP) for Covid-related reasons by discounting or disregarding the normal limits; making it payable from day one; reducing or eliminating service requirements; or raising its value closer to normal pay. Absence management procedures were also adapted to make it easier for workers to take paid time off work without incurring penalties or triggering disciplinary action.
