This chapter summarises the requirements of relevant legislation and regulations referring to hazardous substances in the workplace, as well as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), TUC and union guidance on their practical application. It outlines what reps need to know about the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) including how they relate to the Covid-19 pandemic. It then sets out the current regulations controlling various harmful substances including carcinogens and implements including carcinogens, diesel fumes, silica dust, chemicals, explosive substances, asbestos, radiation, lead and genetically modified organisms. It also covers managing asthma, sharp instruments and legionaires disease and what you need to know about substance labelling.
