Health and Safety Law 2021

Chapter 1

Safety on public transport — travelling to and from work

[ch 1: pages 28-29]

In July 2021, the government lifted the requirement to wear face coverings in law, but “expects and recommends” that people wear them in crowded areas such as public transport. Some transport operators, like Transport for London, are continuing to require face coverings to be worn.

Although employers’ health and safety duties do not apply to risks in travelling to and from the workplace before starting work (see Chapter 5 on workers refusing to put themselves in serious and imminent danger).
