Disciplinary and grievance procedures - a guide for union reps

Chapter 5

Asking for an adjournment

[ch 5: page 58]

It is sensible to ask for a brief adjournment if the member becomes distressed or angry or if the member needs to discuss something with their rep.

If new evidence is sprung on the member, the employer can, as the Acas Guidance suggests, adjourn and reschedule the meeting to allow enough time to respond properly. Introducing new charges or allegations at the hearing may not be consistent with the employer’s obligation to give the employee an opportunity to ask questions, present evidence and call witnesses as set out in para 12 of the Acas Code.
