Tackling racism and inequality - a trade union guide

Chapter 6

Members of far-right organisations

[ch 6: page 55]

In certain circumstances it may be appropriate for unions to press employers to exclude from employment members of far-right or fascist organisations.

A number of unions have negotiated such agreements with employers. The NASUWT teaching union secured a ban on members of the British National Party and other far-right groups from working in education. The PCS civil service union reports an agreement with both the Prison Service and the Home Office that staff are not permitted to be members of the BNP, the National Front, Combat 18 or any other group or organisation promoting racism. And the Fire Brigades Union has agreed similar statements with a number of fire and rescue services.
