Equality: Unions urge action on toilet facilities after TUC survey

Unions are calling on for better toilet facilities for workers after research showed some are resorting to bags or bottles to relieve themselves because of a lack of loos.

The TUC surveyed trade union members in occupations including train driving, construction, teaching and warehouse work. Out of the 4,126 workers who responded, over half (58%) said they do not always have the chance to use a toilet when they need to. Nearly one in two workers told the TUC that they do not always have access to a toilet at work.

The TUC is calling on employers to improve the situation by allowing longer breaks.

The union says employers could also partner with local authorities to improve access and provide reasonable adjustments as part of their legal duties towards disabled workers.

The TUC says that the problem also risks their health and safety. Workers who ‘hold it in’ when they need to urinate are at greater risk of urinary tract infections and kidney disease.

“Toilet access can be especially important for some, including pregnant workers or those with health conditions,” said TUC assistant general secretary Kate Bell.

“We all deserve dignity at work but carrying a bucket or a bottle around as your toilet is not dignified for anyone and holding out when you need to go can lead to health problems,” added Bell.
