Disciplinary and grievance procedures - a practical guide for trade union reps

Chapter 7

Recording devices

[ch 7: page 46]

Consider whether to ask for the meeting to be recorded. In practice, recordings may be of limited use, because transcribing is time-consuming and very expensive. In addition, a verbatim transcript, especially of a long meeting, may not be well-organised, and will not always be as useful as a proper note. A recording can work against a member who says or does something at the meeting which s/he later regrets — although this obviously cuts both ways.
