Migrant workers
[ch 1: page 7]Many migrants are from BAME communities (and even if they are not they can face similar problems to those who are). Also, BAME UK nationals can face discrimination and abuse because they are thought to be migrants.
There are currently 2.64 million legal migrant workers in the UK, accounting for approximately 16% of the UK’s low-skilled workforce. As well as facing high levels of harassment and abuse, the EHRC notes that “many migrants are vulnerable to exploitation and may not enjoy the same economic rights as non-migrant workers”.
While this booklet is aimed at helping reps tackle BAME inequality and harassment, there are clear links between race issues and the problems faced by migrant workers.
