Chapter 8

How much is ASSP?

ASSP is paid at the lesser of SMP (£136.78 per week — 2013-14) or 90% of average earnings.

There is no extra ASSP for multiple births. ASSP is only payable while the mother is entitled to SMP/MA. Since SMP/MA payments stop at 39 weeks and APL can only be taken starting from 20 weeks after the child is born, this means in practice that ASSP can only be paid for a maximum of 19 weeks.

There is no right to payment for APL taken after the SMP/MA entitlement period has ended, unless a separate contractual entitlement has been negotiated.

ASSP is in addition to the two weeks Ordinary Statutory Paternity Pay available around the time of the baby’s birth (see above).
