Notifying intention to take APL

To be eligible for APL, an eligible employee must self-certify, by providing a signed notification to the employer (HMRC Form SC7). At least 8 weeks before the start of the APL, the employee must give the employer details of:

• the due date and the actual birth date;

• the proposed start and end dates of the APL;

• a declaration that the employee will have responsibility for the child during the APL and confirming living arrangements and the purpose of the leave; and

• a signed declaration from the mother, with name, address, national insurance number, and her intended return date.
