Non-renewal of a fixed-term contract

The ending and non-renewal of a temporary (fixed-term) contract is a dismissal. The employee can claim unfair dismissal as long as the other qualifying conditions, for example, as to length of service, are met. It is unlawful to ask employees on fixed-term contracts to waive their right to this protection (Fixed Term Employees (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2002).
