International Labour Organisation
[ch 1: page 10]Another important source of equality rights at work is the International Labour Organisation (ILO), an agency of the United Nations. UK courts and tribunals must take account of ILO conventions and recommendations (Demir v Turkey [2009] IRLR 766). The ILO has a long history of setting international norms protecting workers from discrimination and promoting workplace equality, beginning with the ILO Equal Remuneration Convention 1951 on equal pay for men and women for work of equal value. Most recently, in June 2018, the ILO announced plans for a new ILO treaty to protect workers from sexual harassment and violence.
