Chapter 1

The International Labour Organisation (ILO)

[ch 1: pages 22-23]

The ILO is the only tripartite agency of the United Nations. It brings together governments, employers and worker representatives of 187 member states to set labour standards and develop policies to promote decent work. The work of the ILO Governing Body is supported by a variety of committees. Probably the most important committees from the perspective of trade union rights are the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association and the
ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations. ILO standards and conventions can be taken into account when interpreting human rights and EU law. The main ILO conventions in the context of trade union rights are listed on page 146.
