Chapter 6

Call for an asbestos eradication law

[ch 6: page 115]

In October 2015, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Occupational Safety and Health called for the complete eradication of asbestos in the UK by 2035. In its report, The asbestos crisis: why Britain needs an eradication law, the All-Party Group set out recommendations for all commercial, public and rented domestic premises to be registered with the HSE and surveyed by 2022, with a view to the full removal of asbestos from public and educational buildings by the European Parliament-backed date of 2028 and total eradication by 2035. The report is available from the TUC website.

The Joint Asbestos Union Committee is campaigning for a phased removal of all asbestos in schools, starting with the most dangerous.
