Tackling bullying and harassment at work - a guide for union reps and workers

Chapter 6

Informal action

[ch 6: page 62]

Acas points out that people are sometimes not aware that their behaviour is unwelcome, and that an informal discussion can lead to greater understanding and an agreement that the behaviour will stop.

An informal approach can be made in person or in writing. Alternatively, the victim could ask a colleague, friend, union rep or contact officer/harassment advisor to make the approach for them. An informal approach is, however, often unrealistic and nobody should feel compelled to approach the harasser, or to engage in informal meetings with the harasser about the effects of their behaviour, if they are not comfortable doing this.
