The HSE framework

The HSE has identified six causes of stress, which it calls “risk factors”:

• the demands of the job;

• control over work;

• the support from managers and colleagues;

• relationships at work;

• role in the organisation; and

• change and how it is managed.

These factors are the basis of the HSE’s approach to tackling stress, launched in 2004 — the Stress Management Standards (see page 42).
