Chapter 7

Bringing a discrimination claim

[ch 7: page 252]

Alleging that an employer is guilty of discrimination is a serious step that always needs very careful consideration. It is vital to remain clear, consistent and accurate throughout as to the acts complained of, including any words used. This will increase the likelihood of being believed.

Although this Chapter largely concerns individual equality rights, in practice equality issues at work can often be resolved more effectively by taking collective action with the support of the union. At some employers where unions are recognised, there will be equality reps in place who have been specifically trained to provide support and advice and to coordinate campaigns to help bring about positive change.
