New EU Directive on Whistleblowing
[ch 3: page 17]In April 2019, the European Parliament adopted a new EU Directive on Whistleblowing. Once in force, this Directive will take a much broader approach to whistleblowing protection than that taken to date in the UK, with the aim of encouraging people to disclose work-related breaches of EU law. Broadly speaking, the Directive aims to offer protection wherever there is a power imbalance between the whistleblower and the organisation where they work This contrasts with the UK’s legalistic approach that focuses on “employment status”. There is more information about the Directive in Chapter 9.
