Chapter 7

Bringing a discrimination claim

[ch 7: page 258]

Alleging that an employer is guilty of discrimination is a serious step that always needs very careful consideration. It is vital to remain clear, consistent and accurate throughout as to the acts complained of, including any words used. This will increase the likelihood of being believed.

Although this chapter of the booklet largely concerns individual equality rights, equality concerns at work are often best resolved by taking collective action with the support of a union, with or without tribunal litigation. Many key equality cases cited in this Chapter have been brought with union backing.

At some employers where unions are recognised, there will be equality reps who have been specifically trained to provide support and advice, and to coordinate campaigns to bring about positive change.
