Redundancy law - a guide for union reps

Chapter 8

Enhanced redundancy pay

[ch 8: pages 59-60]

Many employers offer redundancy schemes that are much better than the statutory scheme is and this is an area of ongoing negotiation for trade union reps. Examples provided to LRD include the following (others can be found on the Payline database — see page 72):

• at Haringey Council, enhanced redundancy terms calculated at two weeks’ actual pay below age 41, and 2.5 weeks’ actual pay for completed years aged 41 and above;

• at City of London, calculation is based on 1.5 weeks of actual weekly pay;

• at Pluto Press, the policy applies to all staff who have completed their probationary period of six to nine months and not just those with two years’ service. Redundancy pay includes two weeks’ full gross pay in addition to statutory pay;

• 30 weeks’ pay at Warwick University;

• at Colchester Council, redundancy pay is based on actual wage.
