Chapter 8

Paid time off for training

[ch 8: page 52]

As well as training for new reps, the Acas Code (paragraph 26) recommends that employers agree to give paid time off for further training:

• to develop skills in representation, accompaniment, negotiation and consultation;

• where reps have special responsibilities, for example in collective redundancy and transfer of undertakings circumstances;

• to familiarise or update them on the developing needs of the workforce they represent;

• where there are proposals to change the structure and topics of negotiation on matters for which the union is recognised;

• where legal change may affect the conduct of employment relations and require the reconsideration of existing agreements; and

• where a union representative undertakes the role of accompanying employees in grievance and disciplinary hearings.
