Chapter 9

Shift work and health problems

[ch 9: page 168]

Mounting evidence linking shift work to breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and a range of other health problems prompted the TUC to warn that preventative advice is not keeping pace with the evidence of harm. HSE advice on managing shift work is now more than a decade old and pre-dates much of the new evidence on chronic risks.

Managing shift work: health and safety guidance is available from the HSE website (www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg256.pdf).
