[ch 4: page 69]The maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal is capped at £80,541 (from 6 April 2017), or 52 weeks’ gross pay, whichever is the lower. However, there is no maximum cap in cases of dismissal for health and safety reasons or for whistleblowing. In practice, however, large awards are rare. Ministry of Justice statistics show that the median compensation award for unfair dismissal was just £7,332 in 2014-15.
