Chapter 7

Bringing a discrimination claim

[ch 7: page 281]

Alleging that an employer is guilty of discrimination is a serious step that always needs very careful consideration. It is vital to remain clear, consistent and accurate throughout as to the acts complained of, including any words used. This will increase the likelihood of being believed.

Although this chapter of the booklet largely concerns individual equality rights, equality issues at work are often best resolved by taking collective action, with the support of the union. At some employers where unions are recognised, there will be equality reps who have been specifically trained to provide support and advice, and to coordinate campaigns to help bring about positive change.
