When on furlough, employees cannot undertake work for, or on behalf of, their employer or any linked or associated organisation. This includes providing services or generating revenue. However, a furloughed employee can take part in volunteer work and engage in training.

Other than the requirements to provide information, keep records and not use their furloughed employees, there are no obligations on employers under the job retention scheme. For example, there is no requirement to retain employees who have been furloughed.
