Compensation for unfair dismissal has two main elements: a basic award and a compensatory award. There can also be an additional award where a tribunal orders reinstatement and the employer refuses. Awards are not high. The median award for unfair dismissal in 2015-16 was £7,332. The slight increase on earlier years may reflect the fact that the introduction of fees has deterred lower paid workers from bringing claims.
