State support and coronavirus - a trade union guide

Chapter 4

What is Universal Credit?

[ch 4: page 29]

Universal Credit is intended to provide support for people on low incomes and those out of work. Claims are made by households rather than individuals and the amount awarded depends on the income and circumstances of all the household members.

Universal Credit is being introduced across the UK and will eventually replace a range of so-called legacy benefits for existing claimants. However, most new claimants can no longer make a claim for these benefits and must instead claim Universal Credit. In other words, those claiming benefits for the first time because the coronavirus crisis has affected their jobs and income are likely to need to claim Universal Credit, although they may also be entitled to other benefits.
