Where there is a proposal to dismiss 20 or more employees for redundancy, the employer must consult the appropriate representatives of any employees likely to be made redundant. Where a union is recognised, the appropriate representatives are representatives of the union. Trade union representatives have the right to paid time off to take part in consultation, as well as time off for training in their duties.
