Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations
[ch 2: pages 21-22]Under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR), employers must report any incidents at work if they result in death, a specified injury or incapacity for normal work for seven or more days. This includes incidents where injury is caused by physical violence. This duty is separate from the duty to record all accidents in an accident book. The EIS Scottish teachers’ union advises that, under European Union (EU) law, employers must also keep a record of all over-three day injuries (where an employee is unable to work for over three days even if their injuries are not reportable under RIDDOR).
UNISON advises that, although RIDDOR does not cover threats and verbal abuse, or absences resulting from these, it is in both the employers’ and workers’ interest to record these incidents as the information can be used to spot trends and improve any training and preventative measures in place.
