Crisis response needed, ILO chief tells IMF and World Bank

Speaking to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group, Gilbert F Houngbo, the director-general of international labour organisation the ILO, has called for a crisis response that reduces inequalities and promotes sustainability, through universal social protection, adequate wage increases, greater support for vulnerable economies and respect for labour rights.

Preventing scarring and protecting the most vulnerable by increasing minimum wages and guaranteeing social protection benefits should be among the priority responses to the current economic and social crisis, he said.

Other priority policies include investment in social protection and productive employment.

Long-term policies to tackle persistent large gender gaps, including in pay, pensions and quality of work, were also needed, the director-general stated.
