Pickers submit 200 grievances

The T&G general union has called for a meeting with Sainsbury's, Tesco and strawberry grower S&A Produce to resolve a range of outstanding issues including ongoing concerns about the welfare of the firm's strawberry pickers (see August's Labour Research).

The big supermarket chains took a closer interest in conditions at S&A in July, when the union publicised examples of bad practice and exploitation of migrant workers.

Despite "initially positive" talks with the company, the union says it has been forced to submit at least 200 individual grievances on behalf of workers at its Herefordshire site.
