Inflation continues to shoot up

Inflation has risen to its highest level for 27 years in the measure most used in negotiations. Under the Retail Prices Index, it rose to 5.0% in September from 4.8% in August mainly due to rising gas and electricity prices.

Under the Consumer Prices Index, which excludes housing costs and is the government’s preferred measure, inflation was up to 5.2% in September from 4.7% for August.
