New faces take charge at unions

The EIS Scottish teachers’ union has selected Larry Flanagan as its new general secretary.

Currently working as a teacher in Glasgow, Flanagan is expected to take up his new post as general secretary in April when the current incumbent, Ronnie Smith, retires.

Flanagan, who represents the EIS on the Scottish government’s Curriculum for Excellence Management Board, was selected by the EIS national council in Edinburgh from a panel of four candidates.

Meanwhile, at the TUC-affiliated Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association, Eddie Saville takes over as chief executive. Saville replaces Stephen Campion, who is retiring at the end of the month.

And at the Unity ceramics union, Harry Hockaday has taken over as general secretary from retiring Geoff Bagnall.
