Shock result sees new leader at communication workers’ union

In a shock result, Billy Hayes, long-standing general secretary of the CWU communications union, has lost his bid to lead the union for a fourth term.

Hayes was beaten by former deputy general secretary (postal) Dave Ward, who took a 55% share of the vote in a two-horse race. Turnout was 19.2%.

Hayes had called the election earlier than required, which Ward had said was not in the union’s best interests. Ward takes over the post on 1 June.
