Minimum wage increases by 15%

The German government has increased its national minimum wage, bringing it to ¤12.00 (£10.35) an hour. This new level, in force from 1 October is a 15% increase from the ¤10.45 set in July, and a 22% increase since the beginning of the year.

A ¤12.00 an hour minimum wage was one of the key promises of the social democratic SPD in the 2021 election.

It is estimated that around 6.6 million workers benefit from the increase. German inflation was 10.0% in September.
