Here comes the sun
At this time of year it is always worth highlighting the risks that working outside can present. It will have special relevance to those coping with any hot weather that the British summer can throw up.
HSE guidance suggests that where work can’t be postponed to cooler times of the day, employers take steps to shade work areas, and that employers provide additional breaks, to be taken in the shade and with access to free cool drinking water. Employers should also tell workers how to recognise the signs of heat stress.
The HSE also highlights the danger of the sun damaging skin. It recommends those working outside keep their tops on, wear brimmed hats (that shade the ears and back of the neck), stay in the shade at every opportunity, apply high factor sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.
