Unionising ‘social influencers’

A union for digital content creators, including so-called “influencers”, has been launched to combat the exploitation and race discrimination common in the industry. Fashion blogger Nicole Ocran and influencer expert Kat Molesworth were inspired to form The Creator Union (TCU) by incidents such as that in the US in 2018 where talent management agency Speakr was revealed to owe influencers thousands in unpaid fees.

Another big issue is the increasing evidence that black influences are regularly paid less than their white counterparts and are often asked to work for free.

Molesworth told The Guardian. “People are taken advantage of with unfair practices and it’s just been building.”
