Long hours and irregular heart beat findings

People who work long hours are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation than those working standard hours, according to new research by an international team of researchers reported in the European Heart Journal.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) and contributes to the development of a number of health problems including stroke and heart failure.

The large-scale study of almost 85,500 men and women found that those working 55 hours or more a week had an approximately 40% higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared with those working a standard 35-40-hour week.
