Prospect supports HSE's back safety campaign

Professional union Prospect is backing a major national campaign by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to cut the number of back injuries at work.

The union is urging safety reps to organise inspections focusing on reducing back injuries. It has produced a poster to display at work, aimed at educating staff and management.

"Our members are as much at risk as any other group of employees," said Prospect assistant general secretary Mike Clancy. "We need to spread the message that healthy backs means healthy workers and healthy business. Taking sensible practical precautions, including the use of handling and lifting aids, can reduce back injuries."

Back and upper-limb problems account for the highest proportion of work-related, musculoskeletal disorders, affecting more than one million people a year.

The HSE is providing a range of materials to support unions and other organisations wanting to run events over a four-week period starting on 13 June. For more information, visit www.hse.gov.uk/backs/index.htm
